how the keote ended up on the nyfw runway

Soooo the keote walked down the runway. At new york fashion week. Hello? How did we get here?

If you haven’t noticed by the way the keote is designed, our style guides and the overall energy of this brand, I am incredibly inspired by all things fashion - and always have been. As a little kid I would sew my own clothes, my school notebooks were filled with sketches of dresses, shoes, accessories and my favorite show was project runway (where the winner debuted their collection at NYFW). Even just attending new york fashion week was a pipe dream for the majority of my life - so you can imagine watching the product I developed walk down the runway was a whole other level of “pinch me!!!”

I received the email for a collaboration opportunity right around when I gave birth to my second kiddo - so after my three weeks of “mat leave” (generously termed - extended time off isn’t realistic for founder life) I hopped on the phone and learned it was for Jane Wade’s upcoming NYFW show in September. Aka a short 45 days away. All I could hear in my head was Tim Gunn’s voice saying “Make it work!”. IYKYK.

Coincidentally, around this time we made a last minute decision to release a chartreuse / mossy colored keote to launch in the same timeframe - but the order was on hold due to material sourcing issues. When conversations with Jane started - we realized just how much synergy there was between the two brands. Jane’s designs are built for the woman that goes from the office to the hiking trail - merging polish and function in an out-of-the-box way. Sound familiar?

She mentioned having ripstop nylon in her collection, and the idea for a custom keote naturally fell into place. Her ripstop nylon has a more sporty nature to it, just as strong as the original keote tote but floatier with a more pronounced grid and texture. A little more camping gear energy.

I was admittedly a little nervous about her color palette - as I have a clear vision for the kinds of colorways we release. They need to feel neutral and grounded and, well, keote. I was actually out to dinner with the keote team when initial photos from Jane’s collection were emailed to me and to my very pleasant surprise - she was using a mossy / chartreuse-y green and a mineral-y blue gray that is unlike any color we’ve released. The combination of the two just felt right. Like the city sidewalk and the mossy hiking trail. An ode to the transitional nature of Jane’s designs and the keote itself.

It felt like a little God-wink that the original chartreuse order didn’t work out, opening up an opportunity to work with Jane’s team on our first keote-collab. From here on out my many middle of the night wake-ups with baby consisted of countless back-and-forth emails, whatsapp messages and phone calls with my manufacturer trying to make this come to life. Jane’s nylon was imported from a different country, so customs and communicating with her supplier added additional complexities. “Make it work!” kept running through my head.

We were able to get initial samples ready in time for the show. It was go time. I traveled to the city with our lovely social media team, Kendall and Brielle, for a literal new york minute. I couldn’t leave my baby overnight, so we flew there and back the same day - spending a quick 8 hours in Manhattan.

Seeing the behind the scenes and everything that goes into one of these shows, let me tell you - it’s a production! It was surreal being part of the organized chaos - and even more so when we were seated, took a breath, and watched the show unfold.

Jane and her team masterfully paired the custom keotes with some amazing looks that walked the runway. My favorite was the head to toe moss green ripstop nylon look - where the model was sporting the keote that matched perfectly and flowed beautifully with the outfit.

I also have to mention the ultra-outdoorsy look that influencer Sabrina wore with a mega camping backpack and a keote clipped to the strap. As someone that has done a fair share of camping and backpacking (yes I have an outdoorsy side!!) - I can confirm even with a pack that large, you still need an extra set of hands!

I most certainly welled up seeing the keote go down the runway. For all the hard work, for the three years I’ve been building this brand and mostly for the little girl who always dreamt of working in fashion. It was a top 5 moment in this keote journey and one I’ll never forget.

We made it work. We aren’t a fast-fashion brand in our nature (every keote is made by hand) so a turnaround like this was quite the push. But it was so worth it to bring to life a new, reimagined set of keotes that lean sporty and earthy and got to walk the NYFW runway. I’m so excited to share this limited edition collab with you, our amazing keote community. None of this would have been possible without you.

Moss and slate are live on our site - limited quantities available.

love & blessings,

rachael
